TSA Luggage Locks

TSA luggage locks are approved for safe use with baggage at airports for airplane travel.

When you’ll be flying commercially, you’ll want to have TSA luggage locks equipped on all of your bags.  This way you can guarantee your items will be safe during your flight, anytime your bag isn’t in your possession.  There are a variety of different types as well, so you’re guaranteed to find the perfect lock for your bags.  You’ll want to find one that’s the perfect size, as well as one that uses a control method that you’re comfortable with.  Although most locks feature programmable combinations, some feature keys if you’re not comfortable using combination operated TSA luggage locks.

TSA luggage locks are important to have on any flight, because they enable you to fly without worry for your personal possessions.  While standard combination locks are no longer allowed when you’re flying commercially, there are options so that you can get around this rule.  TSA luggage locks allow you to secure your baggage, without breaking any airport rules.  Typically this works by providing an extra key slot on every lock, that can be operated by a master key that every TSA official possesses.  This way you can lock your baggage, but they can still open and check your bag should they feel the need.

The main thing will be choosing a lock that works for you, and that you feel comfortable with.  The major concern will be the size of the TSA luggage locks themselves.  If you’ll be attaching them to your luggage zippers, you’ll have to be sure that the arm of the lock is small enough to fit through the loops properly. This is important, as purchasing TSA luggage locks that are too large will be completely useless, as you won’t be able to protect your baggage.

Another thing that you’ll want to consider is the way in which the lock operates.  The vast majority of TSA luggage locks are combination operated.  You can find locks that feature programmable combinations, or that come with a default setting that can’t be changed.  Programmable locks are great so that you can change the combination to a number that’s easier for you to remember.  There are also options for TSA luggage locks that are key operated, if you don’t feel comfortable using a combination lock.  These can be useful as they are usually quicker and easier to operate, and there’s no risk of forgetting the combination, and being unable to open your luggage.

When you’re looking to buy any type of TSA luggage locks, you’ll want to go to a department store that specializes in this sort of thing.  Usually office supplies stores are best, because they carry everything the average business person needs on a trip.  At stores like Office Depot or Staples you can find a full range of TSA luggage locks, that will conform to any bag or personal taste.  Locks can be as cheap as $5, or as expensive as $20.  But make sure any model you choose has the TSA symbol on the box.  This way you can be sure they are approved, and you can guarantee you don’t run into any problems from using the wrong type of lock.
